Found a cracked tooth on the excavator thumb and a $4 tube of gear marking compound saved me a weekend
Had a thumb cylinder on my Takeuchi that kept drifting down under load and I swore it was the seals. A buddy who wrenches at a quarry outside Lexington told me to pack the tooth contact with gear marking compound and cycle it slow, and the wear pattern showed the tooth was riding the very edge of the pinion instead of the center. I shimmed it over .020 and the drift dropped to about an inch an hour, which was good enough to finish the pour. $4 tube versus a $600 seal kit I almost ordered. Anyone else check tooth contact before tearing into a cylinder?
