My DIY water filter finally gave up after 8 months

I built this gravity fed filter system back in March with two buckets and some tubing. It worked great until last Tuesday when the output just turned into a trickle... I spent three hours taking it apart and found the charcoal layer had completely packed down into mud. Ended up just buying a store brand filter instead of rebuilding the whole thing. Has anyone else had those DIY projects that work great until they just don't?

8 months seems like a pretty good run for a DIY bucket filter though.

Figure 8 months is fine for a cheap DIY setup, but @haydenp95 I'm not sure that's really something to brag about. Most people replace their furnace filters every 3 months, so a bucket filter lasting 8 months means it probably wasn't doing much work by the end. Not saying it's bad, just don't get why people act like that's some huge deal. It's a bucket with some filter material in it, not rocket science.
