Hot take: skipping dialog in RPGs is ruining the story for new players

I was hanging out with my buddy last night while he played Final Fantasy 7 Remake for the first time. He kept mashing X through every conversation, then got to a big plot twist and asked me "wait who is that guy?" Drove me nuts! I get that not everyone reads every book in Skyrim but the main story stuff is there for a reason. Has anyone else noticed this becoming way more common with younger gamers?

Isn't it possible the real problem is game design, not player behavior? Most modern RPGs front-load so much boring exposition that skipping becomes the only way to reach the fun parts. If the story were truly engaging moment to moment, people would stop mashing X naturally.
