That one control joint layout at the Oak Park job took me 3 whole days
I never used to sweat control joint layout back when most of my work was driveways and small pads. Then last month we poured a 4,200 square foot warehouse slab in Oak Park and I spent three full days just on saw cut layout before anybody even touched a float. The plans had column lines everywhere and no two bays matched, so I was out there with a chalk line and a string running back and forth like a rookie. My old foreman would've had it knocked out in an afternoon with a tape and a sharp eye, but I kept second guessing every cut. I finally drew the whole thing out on cardboard at night with a marker and it clicked in about 20 minutes. Anybody else find the layout eats way more time than the pour these days, or am I just getting slow?
Picture me at 6am on day three of layout, still arguing with a chalk line like it owes me money. You're not slow, those warehouse plans with mismatched bays just eat time, and a cardboard sketch saving you 20 minutes tracks with how my brain works too. Sometimes stepping away and drawing it small beats standing on the slab second guessing every snap.
