That old timer who showed me how to trowel a corner changed my whole approach
I was finishing a small patio in Phoenix last Tuesday and this retired guy walked by, watched me struggle for a minute, then just said 'flip your wrist at the end not your arm.' Tried it and the corner came out perfectly flat. Has anyone else picked up a random tip from a stranger on site?

Trust a random old guy on site and risk messing up the whole job

That whole idea of trusting the random old guy on site is basically how a lot of things get done in the real world. People get so caught up in following every single step from a manual or a YouTube video that they forget local knowledge matters. A lot of times, that old guy has seen the same problem ten different times and knows what actually works there. @the_jana is right to be cautious, but sometimes the book answer doesn't account for the weird stuff on that particular job. Its like asking a local for directions instead of trusting the GPS every single time. You still need to use your own brain to decide if his advice fits, but completely writing him off might mean missing a better way.
