Spent $340 on a used 6 foot straightedge and it saved a whole pour last month
So about six weeks ago I picked up a used 6 foot aluminum straightedge off a guy getting out of the trade, paid $340 for it which felt steep at the time since I already had a 4 footer. Fast forward to a pour last month, a 40 by 60 shop slab outside of Waco, and my 4 footer was reading flat as could be but something in my gut said check the long stretch. Sure enough, that 6 footer showed me the middle of the slab was dipping almost 3/8 of an inch that my short straightedge just could not see. We caught it while the mud was still wet, floating and working it before it set up, and the guy inspecting it the next morning said it was within a quarter inch across the whole thing. If I had trusted the 4 footer and walked away, we would have been jackhammering a section of a slab that had a steel building going up on it two weeks later. So yeah, that $340 hurt when I handed it over but it made me back way more than that in one day. Curious what length straightedge you all run, and do you trust a short one on big flatwork or no?
