Ran across a stat that the average concrete crew wastes about 4% of every yard they pour

Saw it in a trade magazine in a truck stop in Wyoming last week and it got me thinking about all the mud I've left on the ground over the years. Anyone else ever track how much they actually lose per job?

Hold on, are you sure that stat is for the whole job or just the final cleanup? In my experience, that 4% number sounds a little low for what actually gets wasted if you're counting everything from the truck's drum washout to what gets stuck in the pump hose. I've watched plenty of crews lose a lot more than that just from bad timing or a chute that wasn't cleaned between loads. It might be a nice average for a perfect day, but your mileage is going to vary a ton depending on the crew and the pour.

Your mileage is going to vary a ton" is right - I've seen guys waste more concrete in one bad chute jam than I've successfully poured in my entire life.
