PSA: waited 3 extra days to cut my control joints and barely got any cracks
I used to cut joints the second the bleed water was gone, like same day most of the time, because that is what the old guys on my first crew drilled into me. Last week we poured a 24 by 30 slab for a shop floor out in Lebanon and I got pulled off to a tree job that blew up on me, so the slab sat 3 full days before I fired up the saw. I figured I was walking into a spiderweb of cracks and already started practicing my apology to the homeowner. Walked it with him and there was not one crack across the whole thing, just nice straight joints where the blade went. Turns out in that July heat the concrete was still green enough under the surface that the saw chewed through it fine, and it had already done most of its shrinking on its own. I always thought waiting was asking for trouble, but on a hot pour with no wind it seems like the slab wants to move before you get to it anyway. Now I am wondering if I have been cutting too early this whole time and just getting lucky. What is everyone's cutoff on a hot day before you call it too late to saw?
