Finally saw what a bad broom finish looks like on a driveway in Austin

I used to think a broom finish was a broom finish until I saw this driveway where the lines were all jagged and wavy like someone was drawing with their non-dominant hand. Drove by it every day for two weeks and realized how much the straightness of those lines actually matters for the whole look. Has anyone else had to unlearn a bad habit with broom technique after seeing someone else's work?

My uncle actually did a patio in San Antonio back in 2017 that looked like someone shook a paint shaker halfway through the pour. The lines went from tight and straight near the house to loose and zigzaggy near the grass (like he got tired or distracted). He thought it gave it "character" but the homeowner made him redo the whole thing. That's when I learned that broom finish is basically just concrete's version of a haircut - you can really mess it up if you don't keep a steady hand. I still laugh thinking about him ranting about how broom handles should come with level indicators or something.

Did your uncle @wren806 try using a guide board or just wing it?
