A homeowner in Denver told me my broom finish was too aggressive for their patio
They said it felt rough on bare feet, so now I always ask about intended use before picking a broom. Anyone else adjust their finish based on how the space will be used?

Honestly, I think people worry too much about a little texture. A solid broom finish is just safer in general, and @laura_ross's uncle's pool deck sounds like a slip waiting to happen when it gets soapy or slick. Most clients will just get used to the feel after a week anyway.

My uncle poured a pool deck last summer and used a really soft horsehair broom. He said it gives just enough grip to prevent slips when the surface is wet, but it's still smooth for walking. I saw it in person and you could barely feel the texture. It made me realize a driveway finish would be totally wrong for something like that. Now I notice different textures everywhere, like at the park or outside a store.

Yeah, totally agree with you @laura_ross. I had a client last year who wanted a patio done and I didn't even think about bare feet until they mentioned it after I was done. It was a rough broom finish and they were complaining about walking on it with no shoes on. Now I always ask if they plan to go barefoot or have kids playing on it. Honestly, a softer finish like you said makes way more sense for a pool deck or any spot near water. Live and learn lol.
