Unpopular opinion: I stopped using thermal paste on GPU repairs and my temps went DOWN
I know this sounds crazy but hear me out. For the last 6 months I've been running a test bench with two identical RTX 3080s, one with standard paste and one with a graphite pad, and the pad one runs 7 degrees cooler under load. I used to spend 40 minutes cleaning and reapplying paste on every card that came through my shop in Toledo, and half the time the customer would come back a month later with the same overheating issue. The pad takes 2 minutes to cut and slap on, never pumps out, and I haven't had a single return since I switched. Yes the pads cost more upfront, about $18 for a decent one versus $6 for a tube of MX-4, but when you factor in the labor time it's not even close. Anyone else made this switch or am I the crazy one here?
Didn't Gamers Nexus do a test on this a while back and find the pads were pretty close to good paste? I remember them saying the pad thickness matters a lot since the wrong size can mess with mounting pressure. Might be why your test went so well, you got the thickness right.
