Unpopular opinion: I stopped imaging drives before every repair and my comebacks went down
Used to clone every drive before touching a machine, mostly out of fear. Then last month a customer in Reno dropped off a laptop with 6 years of tax files and I imaged it anyway, took 40 minutes, and the actual fix was a reseated RAM stick. Now I just ask if they have a backup, and if they do, I skip the clone and fix the thing. Half the techs I know say that is asking for trouble. What is your rule, image everything or trust the customer's backup?
When a customer says they have a backup, what exactly do you ask them to prove it? I've had people swear up and down they back up to iCloud or OneDrive, then I dig in and find out the last file synced was from 14 months ago because their drive was full or the app was signed out. The 6 years of tax files guy in Reno, did you check if he actually had a copy anywhere before you touched that laptop? That's the part that worries me, not the 40 minutes.
