Thermal paste myths I bought into for years until a shop owner set me straight

I always thought you needed to spread thermal paste manually for the best coverage, some guy at Micro Center years ago told me that was the only way. Then a local shop owner in Portland showed me his method of just a pea-sized dot in the middle and it dropped my temps by 3 degrees on a 2020 build I was testing. Has anyone else had a hardware technique they were stubborn about that turned out to be wrong?

I mean, maybe it's just me but nobody's talking about the pressure from the cooler itself. If you spread it manually you're basically fighting the mounting pressure that's supposed to squeeze the paste out evenly. That shop owner in Portland probably figured out the whole point is to let physics do the work.

I still spread mine manually and my 5800X runs at 68C under load.
