That Wednesday where everything went wrong then suddenly right

Had a client bring in a water damaged laptop from a coffee shop spill. I quoted them $350 for board repair and data recovery. They said no, took it to some other guy who charged $80 and fried the whole thing. Came back to me crying two days later. I still fixed it but the chip replacement took me 6 hours digging through scrap boards. Best part though, they paid $500 plus a referral that landed me a $2k server job last week. Has anyone else had a job that sucked then paid off way bigger later?

Man I gotta say, that's actually a lesson in trusting your gut and your pricing. You probably lost money on the first repair but that referral network is the real gold mine most people sleep on. Honestly, sometimes the universe sets you up for a bigger win through a painful detour.

I was just reading the other day about how small contractors end up making their real money from repeat customers and word-of-mouth, not the initial job. Nathan289 is right about that referral network being the hidden asset, and it's a shame more folks don't see it that way.
