Noticed a lot of colleagues going freelance lately.

I've seen a big shift in how many techs are picking up solo gigs. Just last month, two guys from my old team started taking on their own clients full time. They say they like choosing what jobs to do and when to do them. But it makes me miss the days we'd all huddle around a tricky server issue in the office. Now, with everyone scattered, that shared know-how feels harder to find. Maybe this is just the new normal for our field. I wonder how it changes learning on the job for new folks coming in.

yeah it's wild how much this is happening everywhere, not just in tech. I see it with my friends who do design work, even my barber went solo last year. It's like the whole idea of a steady job with a team is getting kinda rare. Makes you wonder where all that casual know-how goes when there's no break room to chat in. We're gaining freedom but losing those random bits of help that just happen when people share a space.

Read an article calling it the "collaboration tax" @grant.finley, where we pay for freedom with all those lost little tips and shared fixes.

It's hilarious how we're all becoming our own bosses but forgetting how to ask for a second opinion. My friend who does graphic design now just stares at his screen for hours because there's no one to bounce ideas off. Even my barber, who went solo, complains about not having anyone to help with tricky cuts. We've got all this freedom to set our own hours, but miss out on those quick fixes that come from sharing a space. Like, who tells you the printer is jammed or that there's free food in the break room? So much for water cooler talk saving the day.
