I finally understood why that one client's office network kept dropping after I saw their 'server closet' was just a shelf above the water cooler.

Proper placement is overrated if the equipment still works most of the time.

A buddy found a client's main router just sitting on a dusty floor vent. It would overheat and reboot every afternoon.

Remember the time I tried to cool my old console by pointing a desk fan at it? (It just blew more dust bunnies into the vents, which I guess is its own kind of insulation.) That router on the floor vent feels like that same brand of genius problem solving, where the fix makes the whole thing way worse. Honestly, it's a miracle some of this gear works at all given the places we find it. I'm just waiting to hear about one chilling in an actual oven next.
