Finally caved and bought the $80 iFixit toolkit last month, and it's already paid for itself twice over.
I used to think my old generic screwdrivers were fine, but the right bit for a stripped MacBook bottom case screw saved a client's data recovery job from becoming a nightmare last Tuesday.

Come on, that's just lucky. Most people will never need a special bit for a stripped screw, so dropping eighty bucks is crazy. My ten dollar set from the hardware store has fixed everything I've ever opened. That kit is for pros, not regular folks who just want to swap a battery.

Wait, you've never had a stripped screw? @evanr79, that's wild luck right there. I've wrecked like three phones trying to open them with cheap bits.

Honestly, it's the same with everything now. People buy the cheapest tape and wonder why it peels off in a week, or the dollar store knife that dulls after one box. Spending a little more upfront on the right tool for the job just saves headaches later, especially when you're fixing something important. Ngl, I used to be the guy buying the $10 set and praying it worked, but now I see it as just avoiding a bigger problem down the road. It's like buying good shoes instead of cheap flip-flops, you end up paying less in the long run because you're not constantly replacing stuff.
