Customer asked me to "fix the internet" and then watched me reboot their modem for 25 minutes
Last Tuesday in Tulsa, a lady at a dental office flagged me down because their POS system kept dropping the credit card reader. She stood right behind my chair, arms crossed, while I checked the router logs. Turns out the TMobile gateway was fine, but their ancient 5-port switch was overheating after 6 years of dust buildup. I swapped in a $35 Netgear I had in the van, and she said "you just rebooted it, right?" I explained the difference, but she still tips at me like I'm a magician. Has anyone else had a client flat out ignore the actual fix and insist you just restarted something?
Best move is to hand them the old part, let them see the dust caked on it. That usually clicks better than any explanation about heat or switches. Then just tell them it was a hardware swap disguised as a reboot, they'll laugh, and everyone moves on.
