A customer in Tulsa handed me a floppy with her thesis on it and said 'you're the only one who can read this'
That was 22 years ago and she was right, the drive died after one more read, but I still think about how a $2 piece of plastic held four years of her life and nobody under 30 in my shop even knows what the save icon is a picture of.
The part about "a $2 piece of plastic held four years of her life" really gets me. I used to roll my eyes at people who got all worked up over old tech, figured it was just nostalgia and things move on. But the save icon thing flipped it for me. There's a whole generation that will never know why it looks like that, and it's not their fault, the meaning just quietly fell away. Makes me wonder what else we use every day without knowing where it came from.
