PSA: I was sizing grease interceptor vents all wrong for a year
I was working on a new restaurant build in Tempe last month, and the inspector failed the install for the 50-gallon interceptor. He pointed at the vent and said, 'That's a 1.5-inch line. Code says it needs to be at least 2 inches for that flow rate.' I'd been using 1.5-inch for every single job under 75 gallons, thinking it was fine. Turns out I never actually checked the local code table for vent sizing, I just went with what the old foreman taught me. Has anyone else had a local inspector call them out on a vent size they thought was standard?

Our local code in Mesa changed the vent table two years ago. The old chart was based on fixture units, but the new one uses total drainage area. That shift caught a lot of guys using outdated methods. Always pull the current code PDF, not the bookmarked one on your phone.

Our county inspector made us replace every single 1.25 inch trap primer line last fall.
