Called a guy from a supply house for a drain issue and he told me to just pour a bucket of hot water down it first

I was about to rent a snake for a backed up kitchen sink at a diner downtown, but he insisted I try the hot water trick. Saved me a 4-hour headache and 80 bucks on the rental fee. Anyone else get simple fixes that actually work better than the big equipment?

My own kitchen sink backed up last month and I grabbed a bottle of dawn dish soap and hot water, felt like a real idiot (which I am, honestly) standing there pouring it down the drain, but it cleared in about 20 seconds. Makes me wonder if I should just throw all my tools in the trash and only use household cleaners from now on. My wife says I was born without the "try the easy thing first" gene, and she's probably right.

Ha, your wife sounds like mine. She's always asking "did you even try the simple thing first?" I used a similar trick with a different problem. @dylanward my tub drain was slow for months, I poured a half cup of baking soda down it, followed by white vinegar, let it fizz for 15 minutes, then flushed with boiling water. Worked like a charm. Felt like a kid doing a science experiment but it fixed it. I was so ready to buy a snake or call a plumber. Now I try the kitchen stuff before I touch any tools.
