A retired pipefitter in Tulsa told me to quit buying thread tape by the case
Was having lunch at a diner near my last job site in Tulsa last week and got talking to a retired pipefitter at the counter. He asked what I use on my threaded joints and when I said the blue tape, he just shook his head and said most guys wrap way too many turns on 3/4 inch gas lines and it ends up cracking fittings over time. He told me he switched to a good paste sealant for anything over half inch and cut his leak callbacks down to almost nothing. I've been using tape for 11 years and never thought about it, so now I'm wondering what you all reach for on bigger threaded connections.

Wrapped tape for years on 3/4 and 1 inch gas lines and never had a callback from too many wraps, so idk where this guy is getting that from. The real problem is guys not knowing how to wrap the right way, you go with the threads and keep it tight and two or three turns is plenty. Paste has its own issues too, it dries out, it makes a mess, and half the time you gotta redo the joint anyway if you didn't snug it right. Blaming the tape for cracked fittings sounds like a guy who overtightened with a cheater bar and needed something to point at. Maybe it's just me but a roll of blue tape has never let me down on a gas line.
