Why does nobody talk about how rusty most of us are on chamber math until it bites you
Last week I was sitting in a diner outside Galveston with a guy who's been diving 22 years, and we got to talking about tables. He asked me to run a quick deco schedule in my head for a bounce to 90 feet, and I froze for a second longer than I want to admit. He didn't rub it in, he just said the tables don't care how long you've been doing this if you don't keep them sharp. That stuck with me because I've been leaning on my computer for so long that the math got soft in my head. Our dress-out was 3 hours and I couldn't tell him the decompression step without checking the screen. Seems like half the younger guys coming up never learn it at all, they just trust the box. I'm not saying toss the computer, but a diver who can't do it on paper is one dead battery away from a bad day. How many of you still run your own numbers before you trust the screen?
