Trying to explain 'mud diving' to my date's parents was a disaster.

We were at dinner, and her dad asked about my work. I said I did a mud diving job last week, and he thought I was talking about playing in mud puddles. Had to break it down that it involves working in thick silt underwater, which killed the mood. Now I just say 'underwater construction' to keep things simple.

Underwater construction" sounds way less fun, honestly.

Names matter more than we think... @oscar_schmidt46 is right about underwater construction sounding bland. Mud diving at least hints at the messy reality, like working in total blackout conditions with silt that clogs everything. Silt diving sounds a bit more accurate, but still... imagine trying to move through wet cement while fixing a pipe. Calling it just construction misses the crazy skills involved, similar to how landscaping doesn't cover wrestling with mudslides. Sometimes the gritty name tells the real story.

Read an article calling it 'silt diving' which sounds a bit more accurate! Still doesn't capture the hard work though.
