TIL a new trick for cold water dives after a job in Seattle last month

We were doing a hull inspection on a ferry in Puget Sound and my comms kept cutting out. The tender on deck figured out the mic on my Kirby Morgan was icing up inside the helmet from my breath. He told me to put a small piece of foam from a earplug over the mic port. It stopped the moisture from freezing on it instantly. Anyone else have a simple fix for gear freezing up?

Oh yeah, I read somewhere that some divers will put a little piece of gauze or a tissue inside their mask skirt to catch moisture before it gets to the mic. Seems like the same basic idea.

Hold on, they put a tissue in the mask? That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. One wrong move and you've got a soggy piece of paper stuck to your face. I can just picture it coming loose and floating right in front of your eyes. That seems like a great way to cause a problem instead of fixing one.

So the trick for cold water dives is to just breathe less, got it.
