Lost $300 on a drysuit zipper repair I could've done myself

Last spring I sent my drysuit to a shop in Norfolk for a zipper replacement. They quoted me $250 plus shipping and it ended up being $304 total. Took them 6 weeks too because they were backed up. I found out after from a guy on a jobsite that the zipper kit was only $60 and the sewing was pretty straightforward. Has anyone else here tried swapping their own zipper or is that just asking for a leak?

...and the guy on the jobsite probably knows a guy who can do it for a six-pack and a handshake too. That's always how it works after you've already paid the pro price. Honestly swapping a drysuit zipper yourself is like changing your own oil - sure you can do it, but if you mess up the seal you're not just stranded on the side of the road, you're hypothermic in a river somewhere. $304 sounds like the "pay me for my time and insurance" price, not the raw parts cost. You gotta decide if saving $240 is worth the risk of your suit turning into a fancy garbage bag.

Agree with @roseb62 on this one, paying for peace of mind is worth it when water's involved.
