I finally got my surface comms to sound clear after months of static
Switched from a standard mic to a bone conduction setup on my Kirby Morgan hat. The difference over the last two weeks is night and day, I can actually understand topside now. Anyone have tips for keeping the transducer clean in heavy silt?

Man, that static is the worst feeling, like you're trying to talk through a tin can filled with gravel. So glad you got it sorted, clear comms are a total game changer for peace of mind down there. The silt is a real killer for that gear. The distilled water trick is solid advice, it really does make a difference for keeping that film off. A little regular cleaning like that saves so much headache later.

My buddy who works on the Great Lakes rigs swears by a soft toothbrush and a spray bottle of distilled water for his gear. He says tap water leaves a film.

Yeah, I always figured tap water was fine for a quick rinse (you know, just to get the big stuff off). But then I saw the weird white haze it left on my own mask after it dried, like a ghost of every drop. Your buddy's right, that film is real, and switching to distilled water in a spray bottle totally fixed it. It's one of those small things you don't notice until you try the other way.
