Found out a working diver burns through roughly 700 calories an hour in cold water
I was flipping through an old dive manual at the library in Galveston and there it was in black and white, about 700 calories an hour for a diver working in cold water. That hit me hard because I always figured dive work was mostly slow and steady, not some kind of endurance burn. I did a 6 hour shift on a pipeline job last month and ate like a bird the whole time, then wondered why I was wrecked by hour four. Now I'm packing way more food in the cooler, peanut butter sandwiches and the like, and it's a night and day difference down there. I asked the old timer on our crew about it and he just laughed and said he's been telling guys that for 20 years. What are you all bringing on long shifts, and has anyone actually tracked how much they eat on a cold water job?
