Warning: That $40 'mint condition' Daredevil #181 was a reprint. Got burned.

Bought it off a guy at a local con. Looked perfect until I cracked the spine and saw the glossy paper inside. Anyone else get tricked by a fake key issue?

Man, that really stinks. I feel your pain. I got burned on a first print of Amazing Spider-Man #300 a few years back, paid way too much for what I thought was a solid copy. Turned out to be a second print, the paper was all wrong, the cover felt too thin. What finally worked for me was getting a cheap little jeweler's loupe, like 10x magnification, and learning what the real staples and paper grain look like on those old books. Now I only buy from dealers with a solid return policy, even if they ask a little more, and I always ask to see the book out of the bag before I hand over cash. It's a pain, but it beats learning that lesson twice.
