The $150 variant cover trap that got me good

Back in June I saw this foil variant cover for a Batman issue at my local shop, looked amazing on the shelf so I grabbed it for $25. Fast forward three months and I'm down that same rabbit hole, picked up maybe 7 or 8 more of these things from different series. Total I sunk about $150 on covers that honestly just sit in a box now, barely even read the stories inside. Who else got burned chasing fancy covers and ended up with regrets?

Whoa wait, you actually dropped $50 on a single Jim Lee variant? Thats wild man, I thought my $25 habit was bad but 50 is a whole different level of pain. Ngl I probably would have done the same thing if I saw it in person though, those foils just hit different on the shelf.

You said "barely even read the stories inside" and that is the REAL trap nobody talks about. I fell for a similar thing with the Jim Lee foil covers for Justice League #1, bought the $50 variant and realized later I was just buying empty cardboard with cool art. The kicker for me was when I tried to sell them and found out the market is flooded with these foil variants from other people doing the same thing, so they are basically worth what you paid for them if youre lucky.

Fair point, but some of us collect the art not the resale value.
