Spent $180 on a long box of Bronze Age comics at a garage sale in Fresno, half of them smelled like a wet basement
I figured I could flip the good ones and keep a few keys, but when I got home and cracked the box open, about 30 books had mold spots on the covers and water stains down the spines. The seller said they'd been in storage for 15 years, which I should have taken as a warning sign, and now I'm stuck trying to figure out if a bag and board can save any of the decent ones underneath. Has anyone actually rescued moldy comics, or do I just eat the loss and keep the box for the ones that survived?

Mold is tricky because even if you kill it, the spores can spread to your other books and wreck a whole collection. A buddy of mine bought a flooded batch years ago and tried drying them in the sun, which just made the pages wavy and brittle. Your best bet is to keep the moldy ones away from the good stack and maybe just accept those 30 as a lost cause.
