Question about floor seating at Heroes Con after my panel crush

Last month at Heroes Con in Charlotte I accidentally sat in the fan section during a creator Q&A and got to hear a room full of diehards argue about variant covers vs story quality for 20 minutes. It made me wonder if we as collectors care more about the art or the writing when we drop $50 on a single issue. Do you all buy for the cover artist or the writer first, and has that preference ever made you skip a book you regret?
