Pro tip: skip the big con and hit a small shop signing instead
Went to a signing at a shop in Akron last Saturday. Maybe 20 people there, tops. Writer sat and talked with each of us for five minutes. At the big con I paid 50 bucks and got 30 seconds with him. Small shops are the move if you want a real conversation. Anyone got a good small shop in their area that pulls in creators?
Small shop signings are where it's at, no question. There's a little comic place near me that got a mid-list author last spring, maybe 15 of us showed up, and she stayed almost two hours just chatting. Best part was the shop owner grilled burgers out back after and we all just hung out. Compare that to the con where I stood in a line that wrapped around the hall. Way more fun for way less money.
