Picked Watchmen over Dark Knight Returns for my first re-read in 8 years, and honestly I think I chose wrong
I had both sitting on my shelf and only time for one, so I went with Watchmen because everyone always says it's the smarter book. I got about 40 pages in and it felt like homework. The panel work is still incredible, no argument, but this time the whole thing felt cold to me, like I was taking a class instead of reading a story. I finally put it down after two nights and grabbed Dark Knight Returns instead, and I blew through it in one sitting on a Sunday. Miller's old Bruce just hits harder for me right now, all that rage and stubbornness about getting back in the suit. Maybe it's because I'm 38 and everything in my body hurts, but the guy who can't stay retired meant more than the clockwork doom of Watchmen. Does anybody else flip on which one they think is the better read depending on what's going on in their life, or am I just weird about this?
