My uncle told me to skip the polybag comics and buy the beat-up copies instead, he was right and I hate it
My uncle has been collecting since the 80s and when I started getting into back issues about a year ago he gave me one piece of advice I did not want to hear. He said stop chasing the high grade slabbed stuff and start buying reader copies with creases and spine ticks, because you will actually read them. I ignored him for months and bought a graded copy of a Bronze Age book for $180 that I have never once opened. Meanwhile I grabbed a beat up run of 12 issues for $25 at a shop in Akron and I have read every single one of them twice. The graded book sits in a plastic case on my shelf doing nothing while the cheap copies are on my nightstand. He also said the fun is in the hunt and the reading, not the grade, and I am starting to think he knew what he was talking about. So now I have a shelf of shiny books I never touch and a longbox of ugly ones I love. Anyone else find that the cheap flawed copies end up being the ones you actually keep coming back to?
