Had a moment at a comic con panel that changed my collecting habits

At Planet Comicon in Kansas City last year, a guy on a Silver Age panel said he only buys issues that have a personal connection to him. Now instead of chasing every variant cover, I stick to books that remind me of a specific memory or person. Has anyone else tried narrowing their focus like this?

My wallet still hasn't forgiven me for that "personal connection" rule since now I justify buying a $50 book because I once ate a hot dog near a store that sold it.

Wait, does eating near a Barnes and Noble count as a personal connection?
