Chat with a guy at the LCS made me rethink variant covers

I was at my local shop in Austin last week and this older collector said he only buys covers he actually likes, not what's hyped. He showed me his box of $1 bin books that were all gorgeous but nobody wanted. Made me realize I waste way too much money chasing FOMO variants. Anyone else ever stop and ask why you're really buying a cover?

Wait, people actually pass on good covers just because they're not hyped? That's wild to me. I mean I've definitely grabbed a few variants purely because everyone was losing their minds over them only to realize later I didn't even like the art.

Kicked myself for months after passing on that J. Scott Campbell Spider-Man Gwen variant from a few years back. I was like nah it's just another overhyped cover and then I saw it in person at a con and it was way better than the photos online. @harper_murphy you're right about the hype thing, these days I try to actually look at the art not what people are saying about it.
