A random guy at a con in Atlanta totally changed how I talk about comics
I was at Dragon Con last year, just hanging near the artist alley, when I overheard a dad trying to explain the X-Men to his kid. He was getting all tangled up in the different timelines and reboots. This older guy next to me just leaned over and said, 'Start with the characters, not the continuity. Who do you think is cool?' It was so simple, but it flipped a switch for me. Now when my friends ask where to begin, I just ask them that same question. How do you guys handle explaining this stuff to people who are new?

That's a nice idea but it skips the whole point of the story.

It happens all the time. People get so focused on fixing the surface problem they miss the deeper meaning.

Doesn't it kinda miss the point though? @the_jason I get what you're saying about deeper meanings, but surface problems are still real problems. Like if a story is poorly written on purpose by the author, fixing the grammar doesn't fix the deeper meaning. But most of the time people aren't looking for deep meaning, they just want a story that makes sense. It's like saying someone's car has a flat tire and telling them they should focus on the deeper meaning of the journey instead. You still gotta fix the tire if you want to get anywhere.
