Spilled an entire latte on my laptop at a cafe in Austin

I was at Halcyon near the UT campus working on a client report around 2pm when the barista set down my oat milk latte right next to my keyboard. I reached for my phone and knocked the whole cup over, it flooded the left side of my MacBook in like 2 seconds. I froze for a solid 5 seconds before yanking the power cord and flipping the laptop upside down like a pancake. A guy at the next table handed me a stack of napkins and said 'act fast, rice won't save you' so I dabbed every port dry and shoved it in my bag with a bunch of silica packets I always carry for camera gear. Got home, stripped the bottom case with a tiny screwdriver I had, and let it dry on a towel for 48 hours. It somehow booted up with a sticky keyboard on the 'a' and 's' keys, but I lost a whole afternoon of work and now I never put drinks on the same side as my mouse. Has anyone else survived a drink spill and got their machine back, or did I just get stupid lucky?

Used to laugh at people who did this, now I keep a drink tray nearby at all times.
