I thought those portable laptop stands were just extra stuff to carry, but borrowing one from a friend in Denver for a week totally fixed my neck pain.

Now I'm looking for a good, light one under $50 that fits in my backpack, any suggestions?

My old Roost stand lasted five years before the hinge got loose. The lightest ones feel flimsy, you need some metal in the legs for stability. I got a plastic base with aluminum legs, folds flat like a ruler. Check the weight limit, some only hold small laptops.

What kind of backpack do you have? Some of the super light ones only work if your bag has a laptop sleeve.

Check the inside pocket of your backpack first, like michael895 said, because some stands need that flat sleeve to stay put. I used a plastic one with metal legs for years, it folded super thin and never broke. The key is getting one where the legs lock into place, otherwise your screen wobbles when you type. Avoid the cheapest all-plastic ones, they flex too much and feel unsafe. Spend a little more for that metal hinge, it's worth it for the stability.
