Unpopular opinion: light roast coffee has MORE caffeine is the biggest lie my barista buddy ever told me
Grabbed coffee with my buddy Mike last week at this little spot on 3rd in Portland. He's been pulling shots for 6 years and I trusted him. He swore up and down that light roasts pack more caffeine because the beans are denser. I repeated that to people for almost 2 years like it was gospel. Then I actually looked it up on a forum at like 1am and found out it's about weight, not roast level. A scoop of dark roast and a scoop of light roast have basically the same caffeine. The difference is the measuring spoon. I felt like a total idiot. Mike just laughed and said he'd heard it from a guy who trained him. So now I'm wondering, what other coffee 'facts' am I walking around believing? What's the dumbest thing you got told by someone you trusted?
My aunt told me for years that dark roast has less caffeine because the roasting burns it off. She was so sure about it. She'd order dark roast at night specifically so she could sleep. Then one day she was up until 3am wired out of her mind and blamed the barista for giving her the wrong beans. Turns out she just drank a giant mug of regular coffee at 9pm and the roast had nothing to do with it. She still orders dark roast at night though. Some beliefs you just can't kill with facts.
