The air pump that changed my pour over routine in Portland

I was at this tiny coffee spot in Portland, around N Mississippi, and the barista asked if I wanted my beans ground for pour over. I said no, I use a hand grinder at home, and she just smiled and pulled out this little air pump thing she used to blow dust off the burrs. I'd never seen that before, so I tried it on my grinder when I got back, and wow, the difference in my cup was huge. My old grinds always had that fine powder stuck in the basket, now my coffee tastes way cleaner and less bitter. Has anyone else tried blowing out their grinder between uses or am I late to this one?

That little air pump trick sounds like one of those small things you never think about until someone shows you. I've been dealing with the same fine powder stuck in my basket for years, just assuming that bitter taste was normal for pour over. Wiping the burrs with a dry brush never did much for me, so the idea of actually blowing the dust out makes a lot of sense. It's kind of embarrassing how long I went without trying something so simple. I'm glad you posted this, because I was about to give up on my grinder and buy a new one. Now I just need to find a pump small enough that doesn't make me look like a weirdo at the kitchen counter.

Remember that the bitter taste might not be all from the grinder dust. Its actually the coffee oils that go rancid when they sit on the burrs too long. The pump will help with the fine powder, sure, but if you want the real fix, you gotta do a full deep clean with those little tablets made for grinders every couple months. I learned that the hard way after swapping out my pump for a tiny camera lens blower and still tasting that weird sharpness. Also, dont worry about looking weird, my husband caught me blowing into the grinder with a straw once and we just laughed about it. But yeah, the tablets are the real game changer, the pump is just for the quick daily stuff.
