PSA: leveling my new grinder took 3 weeks and I almost gave up

I got a hand grinder for my birthday back in April and the first shots were sour no matter what I did. I messed with dose and grind size for almost 3 weeks before I finally checked if the burrs sat level, and they didn't, off by enough to throw everything out of wack on the coarse end. Maybe 10 minutes with a cheap square and some shims fixed what 21 days of guessing couldn't. Now I'm wondering how many bad shots I blamed on the beans when it was the grinder all along. Anyone else find a dumb setup problem way later than they want to admit?
