My French press gave me better coffee than the $400 espresso machine

I spent 6 months dialing in shots on a Breville Barista Pro, weighing beans and timing pulls every morning. Yesterday I made a cup from a $25 French press and it tasted richer and cleaner somehow. Is there a point where expensive gear stops actually improving the coffee, or did I just never figure out the machine?
