I finally figured out why my morning coffee tasted burnt

For like two years I was convinced I just had bad luck with beans or my cheap grinder was the problem. Every cup had this harsh bitter taste no matter what I tried. Then last week I was visiting my sister and she watched me make a pour over. She asked why I was pouring the water so slowly right in the center. I told her that's just how you do it. She laughed and showed me her method where she circles the water around the grounds. The difference was huge. The coffee came out smooth and actually had flavor notes I could taste. Apparently I was channeling the water through one spot the whole time and over extracting that area while leaving the rest dry. Has anyone else gone years doing a basic step completely wrong?

Hold on now. Running a whole month without soap probably did nothing. That mineral buildup from hard water is going to wreck your heating element. Really bad for seals and gaskets over time too. Sometimes a little bit of soap helps keep all that gunk from sticking around.
