My first Github pull request went from chaos to clean in 3 weeks
Started off just dumping code with zero comments and got roasted in the review. Now I write clear commit messages and use branches - took 3 weeks of practice but it's way easier.

Yeah, but did you ever push straight to main without even looking at your own diffs? Because I was that guy. I used to think branches were overkill and commit messages were for suckers who had too much time on their hands. Then I had to fix a bug I wrote three days earlier and couldn't remember what the hell I was doing, and that was it. Three weeks of forcing myself to write "fix: typo in tax calculation" instead of "stuff" and I actually started finding my own mistakes before anyone else did. Now I can't even look at my old repos without cringing.

Man, the old "stuff" commit message era was a dark time for all of us (myself definitely included). Now I cringe so hard at my early repos I have to close the laptop.

My friend had the same thing happen to them on their first merge... got called out for putting all the logic in one file and had to redo the whole thing. They said switching to smaller commits and proper branch names made everything click after about two weeks of forcing themselves to do it. Now they actually look back at their old code and laugh at how messy it was.
