My coding buddy told me my variable names were 'aggressively bad' and I'm still recovering

I was showing him my project for tracking bar inventory and he just stared at my list of 'thing1', 'thing2', and 'theOtherThing' for a solid 10 seconds before calling me out. He made me go through and rename everything to stuff like 'whiskeyBottlesOnShelf' and 'totalCostPerCase' which felt weird at first but now I actually know what my code does. Has anyone else had someone roast their naming style and it actually made you a better coder?

lol my first program had variables like 'x', 'xx', 'xy' and 'zFinalFinal' because i just wanted to write the fastest code possible. my teacher literally printed out my code and handed it back with "did you have a stroke while typing this" written in the margin. honestly getting roasted was the best thing that ever happened to my coding, now i treat variable names like i'm writing a grocery list for someone with zero context about my life.
