Back in 2010 I had to pick between learning Java or Python for my first real job, and I went with Python because the syntax looked less scary.

That choice worked out well because I was building simple web scrapers within a week, and now I always recommend it to new people starting out-what was your first language and did it feel like the right pick?

My first real job in 2005 had me learning Perl, which was a weird but practical start. It got me automating tasks quickly, even if the syntax looked like line noise. I still tell beginners that getting something working fast is the best motivator.
