A guy at the counter in Spokane showed me why my bevel was so bad on 1/2 inch plate
Stopped by a supply place in Spokane last Friday for tips on my Hypertherm 45, and this older guy named Ray watched me complain about ragged bevels for a minute before he asked what my cut height actually was. Turns out I'd been running .09 instead of .06 on 1/2 inch plate for who knows how long, and he didn't even charge me for the five minutes he spent explaining it. He said "the book is right there on the front of your machine, nobody reads it." Still thinking about that. Anyone else get humbled by a simple number they'd been ignoring?
Did you at least buy the man a coffee or something? Ray sounds like the kind of guy who has forgot more about plasma cutting than most of us will ever know, and he drops it on you like it's nothing. I love that his big wisdom was basically "read the sticker on your own machine" though, that is a special kind of burn. I bet that .06 cut height is going to feel like a whole new machine the next time you fire it up.
