Why does nobody talk about the actual power draw of coolant pumps?
I was looking at my shop's electric bill from last month and decided to check the specs on our main Haas mill's coolant pump. The manual says it pulls 3 horsepower, which is over 2,200 watts just for coolant circulation. I found that out while trying to figure out why our peak usage was so high during long cycle times. Anyone else ever actually look at their pump's energy use?

Yeah, "peak usage during long cycle times" is what got me too. I spent a whole afternoon trying to figure out why my home shop meter was spinning like a top during a four-hour job. I was checking the spindle drive and servos, feeling real smart. Turns out the little pump I'd forgotten about was just gulping power the whole time. Felt like a real genius after that.

Feeling real smart" is the universal first step.
